Exploring Dutch Heritage Through Research

Exploring Dutch Heritage Through Research

Social Network Graph

This social network graph shows how ship owners or charterers (red) connect with skippers (blue). Larger dots indicate more voyages. Use the zoom control in the top-right to enlarge and explore. When you see skippers clustering around an owner/charterer, it suggests the outfitters worked with a chosen group rather than drawing from a common pool. The Verbrugge merchant family, for instance, often hired the same skipper for several voyages (see Tables: A Family Sailing Hierarchy)—a way to add security by relying on familiar, trusted partners.
