Philadelph Van Trump 1819-1874
Philadelph Van Trump was an American lawyer, judge, and politician from Ohio who served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1867 to 1873 after a career in law and journalism.

Philadelph Van Trump was born in Lancaster, Fairfield County, OH on November 15, 1810. He was a printer by trade and later became editor of the Gazette and Enquirer at Lancaster, OH. He then studied law and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1838, and began his law practice in Lancaster, OH.
He was a Delegate to the National Whig Convention in 1852. He was a candidate representing the American Party for governor in 1856, but was unsuccessful. In 1860, he was a delegate to the Bell and Everett State Convention, and served as its president. He also served as a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1862 to 1867. He ran for the Ohio Supreme Judgeship in 1863, 1864, and 1865, but was unsuccessful.
In the 1860’s he ran for the 40th U.S. Congress and was successful. He also ran for the next two U.S. Congresses and served in Congress from March 1867 until March 1873. He did not run for reelection in 1872.
During his six year stint in the U.S. Congress he also served as the President of the Democratic State Convention in 1869. Following his congressional service he resumed his law practice in Lancaster, OH.
Philadelph Van Trump passed away in Lancaster, OH on July 31, 1874 at the age of 63. He was interred in Elmwood Cemetery, Lancaster, Ohio.
