Ivo H. Daalder – 1960
Ivo Daalder is a Dutch-American foreign policy expert specializing in European security and transatlantic relations. He served on the U.S. National Security Council and later as the United States ambassador to NATO.

Ivo Daalder ia a specialist in European security and was a member of the United States National Security Administration [NSC] during the Clinton Administration and a foreign policy adviser to Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign. From May 2009 until September 2013 he was the U.S. Permanent Representative on the Council of the North Atlantic Security Administration [NATO].
Daalder completed his undergraduate work at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and the University of Kent in the U.K. in 1982. In 1983 he received a MS degree from the University of Georgetown in Washington, DC. He then went to MIT from where he earned his doctorate in political science in 1989.
Following his doctoral studies he was a fellow at Harvard University’s Center for Science and International Affairs and at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. The Council of Foreign Relations bestowed a Pew Fellowship on him in International Affairs.
Daalder served as an associate professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Affairs. While there he also served as the Director of Research at the center for International and Security studies. From 1997 until 2009 he was a specialist in European security, transatlantic relations, and national security affairs at the Brookings Institution.
From 1995 until 1997, Daalder served as Director for European Affairs on the National Security Council under President Clinton. From 1998 until 2001 he was a member of the Hart-Rudman Commission on National Security.
Following his appointment to United States Permanent Representative to NATO he was heavily involved in the Libya regime change support provided by NATO, but largely executed by the United States.
As an expert in European Affairs he became involved in much writing which resulted in a total of eight book length publications. He had one award winning book: America Unbound: The Bush Revolution in Foreign Policy [jointly with James Lindsay]. Most of the books were joint works with other authors. In addition he was involved in the preparation of at least 20 newspaper articles. And last but not least he was the author of about a dozen newsmagazine articles.
Daalder was born in the Netherlands on March 3, 1960, and moved to the United States when he began his graduate work in 1982. He is married and has two children.
