Document: Indenture of Bet, 1803

This Indenture made the Twentyeth day of October in the year of Our lord one thousand Eight Hundred and three Witnesseth that Bet a negro wench slave of Jacob Tice aged two years four months & twenty days apprentice to Tobias Ten Eyck of the Town of Canajohary County of Montgomery and State of New York, with him to dwell and serve from the Day of the Date of there present untill the said apprentice shall accomplish the full age of twenty five years, during all which term the said apprentice her said master faithfully shall serve on all lawfull businesses according to her power wit & ability and shall honestly orderly and obediently in all things demean & behave herself towards her said Master and all his during the said term, and the said Tobias Ten Eyck for himself his Executors and administrators doth convenant & agree to and with the said Jacob Tice his heirs executors & administrators for the time being by these presents that he the said Tobias Ten Eyck the said apprentice shall and will instruct or cause to be taught & instructed in all necessary Housework becoming a Negro wench apprentice so as to be as competent a hand at Housework and as women in general are, and during all the term aforesaid find provide and allow unto the said apprentice competent & sufficient meat drink washing & lodging mending and all other things necessary & fit for an apprentice and also shall for the space of Six Months in the said term put the said apprentice to some good English school In witness whereof the said parties to these presents have hereunto interchangeably set their hand and seals, the day & year first said above w-

Received from John S. Glen the sum of Twenty dollars being in full payment for the within named Negro girl Bet which said Girl I do hereby assign all my rights title and interests to John S. Glen and to his heirs and assigns for the time within mentioned and I do hereby warrant and defend the said John S. Glen to hold the said Negro girl
Bet for the term within mentioned, against all person or persons lawfully claimming the said Negro Girl Bet, but he the said John S Glens to give said Negro Girl Bet six
months schooling during said term of time, as witness my hand and seal at Schenectady this 1st May 1804
