Join the New Netherland Institute on Thursday, September 24th at noon for the first episode of Live From New Amsterdam of the season. Russell Shorto will speak with Steven Nadler about Baruch Spinoza and how his works were understood in the 17th century and the enduring fascination with them in the centuries that followed.

  • Live From New Amsterdam: “America is Us”

Geerten Waling’s new Dutch book Amerika, dat zijn wij  argues that many of the ideas that shaped America’s founding were developed in the Dutch Republic of the 1600s, and reached the American founders both directly—through New Netherland and Dutch political practice—and indirectly, through John Locke's years in the Netherlands. Join Russell Shorto, Director of the New Amsterdam Project, and Geerten Waling as they discuss the Dutch influence on American beginnings.

  • From Wenters to Wisconsin: Dutch Migration Through Film & Music

The program features a selection of short music films by Dutch animation artist Udo Prinsen, including From Wenters to Wisconsin, a poetic short inspired by the experiences of Dutch immigrants who left their homes in the 1840s in search of greater prosperity in the United States.
