Live From New Amsterdam: “America is Us”

Presented live on Zoom

Geerten Waling’s new Dutch book Amerika, dat zijn wij argues that many of the ideas that shaped America’s founding were developed in the Dutch Republic of the 1600s, and reached the American founders both directly—through New Netherland and Dutch political practice—and indirectly, through John Locke’s years in the Netherlands. Join Russell Shorto, Director of the New Amsterdam Project, and Geerten Waling as they discuss the Dutch influence on American beginnings.

Geerten Waling is a Dutch historian, author, and public intellectual specializing in the history of democracy, political culture, and the development of free societies. He studied history at the University of Amsterdam and earned his Ph.D. from Leiden University (2016) with a dissertation on the democratic revolutions of 1848. He has written several books on political history and philosophy, including Americas, That’s Us: The Dutch Influences on the Founding Fathers, which explores how the Dutch Republic shaped the ideas and institutions behind America’s founding.

Russell Shorto is the director of the New Amsterdam Project at The New York Historical. He is the author of seven books, including Taking Manhattan and the national bestseller The Island at the Center of the World.
Live From New Amsterdam is an ongoing series hosted by the New Netherland Institute and the New Amsterdam Project at The New York Historical. Through vibrant conversations with scholars and historians, each program will investigate new and exciting research related to New Amsterdam, New Netherland, and the lasting legacies of Dutch rule in New York.
